NOT SO GREAT:

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova: I can’t believe I dragged that huge book with me back and forth on the train for this story. It came to be my albatross, willing myself to finish it. If you are into Dracula stories, maybe you will like this, but I still believe you can easily cut out the middle three hundred pages and you still would have gotten the same reading experience.

The Mermaid’s Chair by Sue Monk Kidd: It kills me to say this, but this was awful. I was so sad, because I SO loved the Secret Life of Bees. It seemed that Sue was rushed writing this, perhaps? And she also was trying to throw everything from her bag of ideas in one story, a relationship with a mother,  a relationship with a dead father, an affair with a priest, an eccentric circle of friends, symbolism in religion and goddesses. Goodness, I could not keep track of it all, and there was so much that she did not go deep enough on anything to really grow a relationship with any of the characters. There were moments her talent and beautiful writing came through, where I got teary at some sections that really pulled at my heart.

Body Surfing by Anita Shreve: This was such a disappointment. I loved Anita Shreve’s previous books, but this was very “bubble gum”. It was way too fluffy and I really don’t know what the point was. My book club girls agree, pass this one up.
